Please tell me someone has seen this sadly under rated movie! It's
Disney's
It's my favorite movie with the possible exception of 'Bambi'. I love this film. Released in 2003, 'Treasure Planet' is a vivid reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island'. It's basically 'Treasure Island in Space'. Sounds a little silly, but when you actually watch it? It works! It works so well! The characters are so rich (though I would've liked to see a little more time given to the development of each), the backgrounds are beautiful, and for the most part are all CGI. The wonderful thing is, you rarely even notice the backgrounds are in a computer, they look like master painters did them. The whole visual style is very much like old paintings, very warm and woody (unlike most sci-fi which is general very cool and cold), thanks to a technique the Disney guys used called 70/30. The special effects are breathtaking; when that big three masted ship takes off into the skies, or a star goes supernova! The music by James Newton Howard and John Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls, is AMAZING! It's some of my favorite music ever! The animation is top-notch, totally hand drawn (With the exception of one and a half characters which is CG, but they still integrate magnificently) Of course my favorite animator of all time, Glean Keane is on it. (Animated the Beast and Pocohantos) doing Long John Silver, and his utter evil awesomeness. If you couldn't tell already, Silver is my absolute favorite character! Though Captain Amelia is a close second.
I love most everything about this movie, not least of all this; here's Jim Hawkins, animated by John Ripa (Tarzan) busting some wicked awesomeness on his wicked awesome solar surfer.
I remember last time I saw this movie (I'm lucky enough to own one of the DVDs that were released for a limited amount of time) the solar surfing reminded me of Adriane in 'Ghost Wolf', right?
Anyway go rent the film, because it's totally worth it. It has it's flaws of course, but I still can't help but love it. See it just once, if you haven't! And for those who already love this poor negelcted Disney classic, let's have a cheer!
